The Friends of the Coral Springs Libraries organization was formed on April 18th, 1973, and is a chapter of the Friends of Broward County Library and is a non-profit 501c3 organization as defined by the US Government for tax purposes to promote, publicize, and support the Library. The Friends of the Coral Springs Libraries is a coalition of individuals dedicated to increasing public awareness and use of the library, as well as to support its many programs in research, education, and public service.
The Friends of Broward County Libraries is an "umbrella" organization of 32 local chapters.
The Friends have been instrumental in the growth of the library system since 1975.
The umbrella group brings together the leaders of local Friends groups at meetings at the county, state and federal level
and helps to sustain county, state and federal funding for the library system.
Advocacy efforts of board members include participation in Library Days in Tallahassee and trips to Washington while Congress is in session. The Executive Board is comprised of individuals from local chapters and members at large who help
to guide and support the Friends. They are available as a resource to the local chapters.
Monthly Meetings
The Board of Directors of the Friends of the Coral Springs Libraries meets the first Thursday of the month at 1:00 PM. Meetings usually last two hours. We would be glad if you joined us. Please call us in advance to receive additional information. We are currently increasing general member ship and adding new board member. Membership dues for the system wide Friends of The Coral Springs Libraries is $10 annually.
In 1971 the Welcome Wagon started a Community Project. They collected books and starting raising funds for a library.
By June of 1972 they had acquired 7,000 books and hired a full time librarian. They started recruiting for a Friend of the
Library group.
The first meeting of the Friends of the Library was at the Publix on Sample and University Dr.
The first library was in the Publix plaza and then was moved to the Coral Springs City Hall. The library then moved to Mullins Park in 1982 and the current Northwest Regional Library opened in 2001.
The City Of Coral Springs had agreed to partially fund the West Atlantic library after Northwest Regional was opened.
Unfortunately due to budget constraints, the City changed its mind and sent a letter to the County advising that it would
no longer be able to fund its portion of the library's operation.
Since the County was unable to pick up the deficit, the library was closed to the public in November, 2008.
Monthly meetings of the umbrella group provide opportunities for Friends to share successful ideas and plan for the future.
